Spain Offers Legal Status to Hundreds of Thousands

Spain is starting a new plan to give legal papers to about 500,000 people. These people live in Spain but do not have official documents. This is different from other countries in Europe.

The Minister of Inclusion, Elma Saiz, called it a "historic day." The plan wants to help people live and work in Spain. It also aims to support the economy. To join the program, people must have lived in Spain for at least five months before December 31, 2025.

Applications will be accepted from April to June. This is a chance for eligible people to become legal residents. The number of people without papers has grown a lot. It went from about 107,000 in 2017 to nearly 838,000 by the end of 2025.

Minister Saiz said Spain wants a migration system based on human rights. She also said it should help people live together and support the economy. Giving legal status will help people find jobs. It will also help Spain because the country has fewer young workers.

People who get legal status will receive a one-year permit. They can renew it later. They must not have a criminal record. This rule helps keep the country safe. Many other European countries have stricter rules. Spain expects about half a million people to benefit. Many of these people come from Colombia, Peru, and Honduras.

Spain's economy is growing well. It is expected to grow by almost 3% in 2025. The new plan will help the economy grow more. It will also help people feel more stable and respected. This shows that migrants are important for Spain's future.
