Tech Giants Accused of Making Social Media Addictive

Major technology companies are in court in Los Angeles. Meta, ByteDance, and Google are accused of designing social media platforms. They allegedly designed them to make young people addicted. This has caused harm to their mental health. The trial started on Tuesday. It could change laws for tech companies in the US and worldwide.

A 19-year-old woman, KGM, is leading the case. Her lawyer, Matthew Bergman, says the platforms trap young people. They use advanced algorithms. This leads to too much use and distress. This lawsuit is part of a bigger movement. It challenges legal protections for tech companies.

Snapchat settled a case last week. But Meta, ByteDance, and Google will face a full trial. The trial will look at how platforms keep users engaged. This includes notifications and content designed to keep people online. Mr. Bergman said many young people suffer globally. He believes this trial is important. It is the first time a social media company will face a jury.

Other actions are happening too. The European Union is watching online platforms closely. WhatsApp was called a "Very Large Online Platform." This means it must protect users better. WhatsApp must do this by mid-May.

The EU is also looking at Facebook and Instagram. They are checking if these platforms protect children. These events show a global trend. Companies are being held more responsible for their products. A win for the plaintiffs could set a new standard. Tech companies might have to change how they design platforms. WhatsApp could face big fines if it does not follow the rules. This is a critical time. Platforms are now more responsible for mental well-being.
