A large winter storm has caused many problems across the United States and in southern Ontario, Canada. Many flights were cancelled. Many people lost electricity. Roads were dangerous for driving. The storm brought very cold weather, heavy snow, sleet, and ice. It caused damage from the southern plains to the northeastern coast. Forecasters say another big storm is coming to the eastern US this weekend.
Many communities have been strongly affected by the storm. In Tennessee, over 200,000 people did not have electricity on Monday afternoon. Fallen trees and power lines made it hard for repair workers to do their jobs. Joy Flores from the Nashville Rescue Mission said that fallen trees blocked roads. She also had no heat or internet at her home. This showed how many people were having trouble.
Air travel was also greatly affected. About 19,000 flights were cancelled or delayed over the weekend. Many travelers were stuck. Sadly, the storm also caused deaths. At least twelve people died in different US states. Eight people died in New York City from Friday to Monday.
New York City got 11.4 inches of snow in Central Park. However, other places in the Northeast got much more snow, with some getting over 20 inches. This heavy snow and ice made many roads very dangerous. The Frisco Police Department in Texas responded to many car accidents. Many trees fell and power lines broke because of the storm. As people start to clean up, another winter storm is expected. This means more challenges for the eastern United States.
