US Raises Tariffs on South Korean Goods

The United States has increased tariffs on many goods from South Korea. The duty rate went up from 15% to 25%. President Donald Trump announced this decision on social media. It affects important industries like cars, wood, and medicine. Some products that had trade agreements are also impacted. South Korea was surprised by this change. They have asked for quick talks with the US. This is to lessen possible economic problems.

This action seems to be because President Trump was unhappy. He felt South Korea's government was slow to approve a trade deal. He questioned the delay publicly. He said the South Korean legislature did not keep its promise. The US had agreed to lower its tariffs too. This was after South Korea started the approval process. That process began last year. It was expected to finish by February.

South Korea's Minister of Industry, Kim Jung-kwan, is going to Washington. He will meet with US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick. This shows South Korea wants to talk to solve the trade issue. The Blue House wants to have talks quickly. They want to manage the effects of the US decision. The US did not give notice about the tariffs.

Higher tariffs are already causing economic effects. South Korea's stock market went down at first. It later recovered a little. American companies that import these goods will have higher costs. This might raise prices for consumers. It could also affect how reliable supply chains are. Car companies in South Korea saw their stock prices drop. This shows how sensitive markets are. The trade deal was meant to help both countries. Now its future is uncertain. South Korea had planned to invest much money in the US. This new trade problem makes that investment less sure.
