The Kato Pyrgos Dam has overflowed for the first time in many years. This is a big success for farmers in the Tillyria region. The overflow happened because of a special project to fix the dam. For a long time, the dam could not hold much water. This was because of dirt and stones. The dam is very important for local farming.
The dam had a big problem with silt and debris. This reduced its water storage. Local farmers did not have enough water for their crops. They asked for help for many years. The Water Development Department started a plan to fix this. They worked together with other groups.
The project removed about 90,000 cubic metres of material. This was a lot of work. The government provided money for this. The European Union also helped with funding. The work finished in 2025.
Now, the dam can store water again. It is full and working well. Local farmers can now water their fields easily. This is good for their crops and their businesses. The Nicosia Water Board helped manage the dam after the repairs.
This project shows the government wants to help rural areas. It makes farming more secure for the future. The dam overflow is a symbol of new hope. More money, €1.15 million, will also help improve irrigation systems.
