Cyprus Gets Some Rain, But Water Problems Remain

Recent rain in Cyprus has helped water levels a little. Over three days, about 2.4 million cubic metres of water was added to reservoirs. However, experts say this is not enough. Cyprus has had a long dry period. The recent rain is welcome, but it does not fix the main problem.

January rain was 104% of the usual amount. One week had almost 20mm more rain than expected. But Cyprus's dams are still very low. They now hold only 34 million cubic metres of water. This is just 11.8% of their full capacity. The situation is still serious, even after the rain.

The Water Development Department (WDD) said the rain helped the soil. It was good for the Paphos area, which received half of the rain. But a senior officer said it is not enough for the long term. More water is needed for the hot summer. Evaporation will cause water loss then.

Good news is expected for rain. More rain is forecast until February 20th. Cyprus might see heavy showers from January 26th to February 20th. However, future climate reports are not as positive. The eastern Mediterranean region is expected to have less rain. This will make water shortages worse.

Cyprus is investing over €200 million in water management. Projects include new pipes and better water treatment. They are also building more wells to find underground water. The rain that flows to the sea also helps the environment.

Experts warn that everyone must use water carefully. Climate forecasts show less rain in the future. This will increase water problems. Using water wisely is not a choice, but a need. The state and citizens must work together. They must protect water as a very important resource.
