Haiti Leaders Plan to Change Prime Minister

Haiti's Transitional Presidential Council (TPC) wants to remove Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aime. This is a big change. The United States had asked them to keep the Prime Minister. They said he is important for fighting gangs. He also helps make the country stable.

The TPC has nine members. They were formed after President Jovenel Moise was killed. The council now says it can choose and remove the Prime Minister. Council member Leslie Voltaire said the TPC chose Mr. Fils-Aime in November. Now, they will choose a new Prime Minister and a new government. They hope to do this in 30 days.

However, this plan needs to be published in the official newspaper. This is important for the plan to be legal. This decision shows a difference between the TPC and the US. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Mr. Fils-Aime was important for fighting gangs.

The TPC's plan ignores the US request. This makes people wonder about future relations between the US and Haiti. It also questions how much the US can influence Haiti's government. The TPC's mandate ends soon, on February 7th. This makes new appointments uncertain. Haiti has had a lot of insecurity and problems with its government. Elections have been delayed many times. Gang violence stops normal life and progress. The TPC is trying to lead during this difficult time.
