Indonesia Halts Companies After Floods

Indonesia's government has stopped 28 companies. It is also taking legal action against six others. This is a strong response to bad floods and landslides. The government says these companies harmed the environment.

The floods happened in November 2024. They caused over 1,100 deaths. Many Tapanuli orangutans also died. Scientists called this a disaster for the orangutans. The government investigated the companies. They cancelled permits for mining and logging. This also includes oil palm farms and a big power project.

One suspended company is Martabe goldmine. Its work stopped in December. The company said it respects the government's choice. The government is also suing six companies. They want 4.8 trillion rupiah for damage. The government believes these companies hurt the environment. This made the natural disaster worse.

The Batang Toru area is important. It has many different plants and animals. The Tapanuli orangutan lives there. Conservationists have watched this area for a long time. The recent floods made people look closer at the companies. The government wants to stop future disasters.

Many conservation groups are happy. Amanda Hurowitz said this is good news. She said the ecosystem needed this. The government is using strong actions. They are stopping companies and suing them. This shows they care about nature. It also shows they want companies to be responsible. This is a step for a better future.
