Cyprus Election Poll Shows Shifting Politics

A new poll in Cyprus shows big changes in politics. This is just weeks before the country's election on May 24th. Rai consultants did the poll for Alpha television. The results show that the nationalist party Elam is getting more support. It is now closer to the main parties, Disy and Akel. New parties are also becoming more popular. However, one older party is losing support.

The poll asked 1,031 Cypriot voters about their choices. This gives us a good idea of what people are thinking. For a long time, Disy and Akel were the most important parties. But now, Elam has 10.3% of the votes. This is only 3.3% less than Akel, which has 13.6%. Disy is still first with 14.3%. The small difference between these top parties could change the political system.

New parties are also doing well. Alma, started by Odysseas Michaelides, has 6.6% support. Fidias Panayiotou's Direct Democracy movement has 6.3%. This shows that some voters want new choices instead of the old parties.

However, Diko, a major party, is not doing as well. It has only 4.9% of the votes. This is lower than in past elections. It is not clear if Diko can win many seats in the parliament. Other parties like Volt and Dipa have less support. They are unlikely to win many seats.

Many voters, 21.9%, are still undecided. This could be very important in the last weeks of the campaign. Also, 6.4% of people do not plan to vote. Some others might spoil their ballot. These numbers suggest politics in Cyprus might become more divided.
