UN Envoy Leads Cyprus Peace Talks

A United Nations envoy is leading important talks on Cyprus. María Ángela Holguín is the UN Secretary-General's personal envoy. She is trying to help the island find a solution. The island has been divided for many years.

Holguín met with political leaders and negotiators. Her visit is from January 26th to January 29th. She wants to restart efforts for a complete settlement. A key meeting is planned for Sunday, January 28th. President Nikos Christodoulides will meet Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhürman.

The UN envoy met separately with both leaders on Saturday. This allowed them to share their views. Before this, she spoke with their negotiators. This helps her understand all the problems.

These new meetings follow a previous one on December 11, 2023. This shows that the peace process is continuing. The meetings are designed to build on past discussions. The UN envoy helps to bring people together. She wants to create a good atmosphere for finding common ground.

Before coming to Cyprus, Holguín spoke with Kaja Kallas in Brussels. Kallas is the EU High Representative. This shows that the European Union is also interested in a solution. The EU may have a role in the future. This suggests a united international effort.

Holguín's main goal is to move the difficult negotiations forward. She wants to find a lasting solution for Cyprus. She must improve communication between the two communities. This has been a difficult problem for decades. The meetings are planned carefully. They aim to solve complex issues. The next few days will show if these talks can lead to real progress.
