German Detainee Accuses Cyprus Prison of Mistreatment

A German woman in a Cyprus prison has made serious claims. She says she was mistreated and lived in bad conditions. These claims have started a court review. Her lawyer is asking for her to be released with conditions. The lawyer said she faced "humiliating treatment" for over 18 months. This has made her a key person in a legal case. It also raises questions about the prison's care for inmates.

The case was brought to the Nicosia Criminal Court. Her lawyer, Sotiris Argyrou, told the court about her suffering. The woman faces charges for taking property in the north. However, her prison conditions are now the main focus. Mr. Argyrou asked for her release. He suggested she stay in a hotel. She would also need to pay a large amount of money, up to €600,000. She must report to the police daily and give up her passport.

A major complaint is about not getting important medicine. Mr. Argyrou said she has not had this medicine since December 2024. The medicine was available in Cyprus before that. It was given sometimes in November and December. However, it stopped in January. It was only given again last week after many letters from the defence. The detainee also reportedly found a rodent's head in her food. After this, she allegedly received threats. Her request to give a statement outside the prison was denied. She was also not given a special diet of yogurt and vegetables, unlike other prisoners.

The court has asked for written statements. Both the detainee and the Central Prisons must provide information. This shows the court is taking the claims seriously. The prosecution will also give written statements from the prison. This will share the prison's side of the story.

These events happen after a report by the European Committee for the Prevention of Torture. This report about Central Prisons was published in April 2025. The specific details about this case are not public. However, the report shows that prison conditions are being watched. Mr. Argyrou has contacted officials. He mentioned the CPT report in his letters about his client's complaints.

The German woman is still in prison. The court will wait for the written statements. This is a careful way to handle the situation. The decision could affect her future. It might also lead to changes in the Cyprus prison system. This would help ensure prisoners' rights and dignity.
