Museveni Wins Uganda Election Amidst Controversy

Yoweri Museveni has won Uganda's presidential election. This means he will stay in power for another term. The announcement was made on Sunday. However, many countries have criticized the election results. Opposition parties say the election was not fair. They pointed to problems like internet shutdowns. There were also reports of government repression.

President Museveni sought his seventh term. He received about 72% of the official vote. The opposition leader, Bobi Wine, disagrees with this result. Wine, who got 25% of the vote, called the election "fake." He said there were many problems. These included ballot stuffing and the abduction of election officials. Many observers agree with these claims.

Before and after the election, there was tension. The government shut down the internet for almost three days. This made it hard for people to communicate. Many believe this was to stop protests. The internet is partially back now. However, social media is still not available.

Bobi Wine said security forces entered his home. This happened on Friday. There was a strong police presence at his home on Saturday. Wine said they turned off power and cameras. The authorities denied raiding his home. They said they were preventing unrest.

The election had some violence. Police clashed with opposition supporters. Some people were injured and died. Officials say seven people died. An opposition MP claimed ten people were killed by security forces. The government called some opposition members "terrorists."

Biometric machines did not work well in some areas. This meant manual lists were used. The opposition says this helped stuff ballots. Museveni has been president since 1986. This election is disputed. There are also concerns about human rights and freedom online.
