A top group from the European Parliament visited Cyprus on Monday for two days of meetings. The visit is important because Cyprus will lead the Council of the European Union in 2026. This leadership role changes every six months between EU countries.
The delegation was led by the President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola. They met with Cyprus's President, Nikos Christodoulides, and his ministers. They talked about plans for when Cyprus is the leader. Cyprus says it will focus on important issues like security in the Eastern Mediterranean, clean energy, and managing migration.
The visit mixed formal meetings with public events. The European officials also met with Cypriot lawmakers. In addition, they spoke with young people at a school in Larnaca. Students there could ask the visitors questions directly.
A government spokesman said the visit shows that the EU recognizes Cyprus's role. He said Cyprus is preparing for this task with seriousness and confidence. The country wants to help build a common European future.
Experts say this kind of visit is more than just a ceremony. It helps Cyprus and the Parliament plan their work together for 2026. It also lets Cyprus explain its views on regional issues to important EU politicians. Now, Cyprus must use these discussions to create real plans for its six months as leader.
