Cyprus Fights Growing Crime Wave

Cyprus is seeing more organised crime. This has caused more violent events. The government must now respond strongly. Recent fights in Larnaca with weapons show a big threat. Criminal groups from Cyprus and other countries are involved. Citizen safety is now a major concern.

Last weekend, there were worrying events. In Larnaca, people used guns and knives. This happened in the afternoon. Police and migration officers started a big operation on Sunday. They looked for migrants without papers. More than thirty people were caught. They will be sent back to their countries.

The new Justice Minister, Costas Fitiris, spoke about the problem. He knows people worry about safety. He said the government will fight all criminals. He promised to stop organised crime. This will happen no matter where criminals are from.

The violence and the migrant search seem linked. Police think some criminals use people who move around. However, fighting organised crime in Cyprus is hard. A murder in Limassol also shows the seriousness. Police have arrested someone for this crime. But, it can be difficult to investigate serious crimes.

A big problem is a law about recording phone calls. This law is ten years old. It is still not approved. This law would help police get evidence. They could use phone recordings in court. Without it, police have fewer tools against organised crime.

The recent events have made people pay attention. The government is taking action. They want to stop the rising crime. However, success needs more than just police work. Law enforcement needs the right laws and tools. Cyprus needs to act fast to be safe.
