Cyprus Faces Coldest Day of Winter

Cyprus is having very cold weather. Monday is expected to be the coldest day this winter. People across the island are feeling much colder than usual. They need to take care to stay warm. The weather service warned about sleet and wet snow. This might happen in the high Troodos mountains. Frost is also expected in higher and inland places.

Cold air has moved into the region. This is causing temperatures to be much lower than normal. A meteorologist, Panagiotis Ligkis, said the weather is very severe. Coastal areas might reach 14°C. Inland areas may only get to 11°C. The Troodos mountains will be the coldest. Temperatures there will be about 1°C on Monday. It could drop to -3°C at night on the highest peaks.

The cold weather will continue for several days. Tuesday might have clear skies. However, temperatures will still be below average. Strong winds from the north-east are making it feel colder. Some places might feel a force five wind. A slow improvement is expected later in the week. By Wednesday and Thursday, more clouds will appear. This should help temperatures to rise a little.

Frost is likely to stay all day in the highest parts of the Troodos mountains. This will create a beautiful but very cold scene. People are advised to wear warm clothes. They should also drink warm drinks. There might be some rain or sleet on Monday. Wet snow is possible in the Troodos mountains overnight. Snow has already fallen on the highest peaks. Chionistra has up to 28 centimetres of snow. This cold weather shows how strong the current weather system is.
