Museveni Wins Uganda Election Amidst Fraud Claims

President Yoweri Museveni has won Uganda's presidential election. This is his seventh term in office. He has led the country for over 30 years. The election commission announced the results. Museveni received 72% of the vote. However, the election faced many problems. There were many claims of fraud. The internet was shut down for days. There was also a lot of violence. These issues made people worry about democracy in Uganda.

Bobi Wine was the main opposition candidate. He is also a former musician. Wine has rejected the official results. He said the election was not fair. He believes the government changed the results. The commission said Wine got 25% of the vote. Wine said there were many problems. He mentioned ballot stuffing and changing voter lists. The government shut down the internet before the vote. This was seen as a way to stop people from sharing information.

After the election, there was unrest. There were fights between security forces and opposition supporters. This happened in many parts of Uganda. Authorities said at least seven people died. However, opposition leaders think more people died. One Member of Parliament said security forces killed ten of his team members. A police spokesperson said security forces acted in self-defence. She called the attackers "opposition goons."

Bobi Wine also said he was taken from his home by a helicopter. Officials said he was not arrested. He was in a restricted area. This showed the high tension in the country. Wine's campaign also said that voting machines did not work in some areas. People had to vote using paper lists. This made it easier to cheat.

Uganda's elections often get international attention. Some organizations say Uganda is "not free." They say elections are held, but they are not fair. Museveni became president in 1986. He brought stability but also more control. This election was important for Uganda's democracy. Bobi Wine represented a younger opposition. Wine asked his supporters to protest peacefully. The capital city is quiet. Many businesses are closed. People are worried about the future.
