Historic Mosque and Schoolhouse Restored in Cyprus

Conservation work has started on an old mosque and schoolhouse. This is in the Limassol area of Cyprus. The work is supervised by a special committee. This committee works for both sides of the island. It shows a strong effort to save Cyprus's old buildings. These places have many memories. They are now being protected.

Ali Tuncay leads the committee. He said the work began in Ayios Thomas village. This village is important historically. It was once a Turkish Cypriot village. Many Turkish Cypriots lived there. Later, they moved north. Now, a few Greek Cypriots live there. Mr. Tuncay said the committee wants a fair approach. They respect all cultures on the island.

This project is part of a bigger plan. The European Union gives money for this. The United Nations helps with technical support. The committee also plans work in other villages. They will restore mosques in Koilani village. They will also restore ten more mosques. Five will be in Paphos and five in Larnaca.

Restoring religious buildings is important. The committee is already working on monasteries. They are restoring Panayia Apsinthonissa and Apostolos Andreas monasteries. More projects on religious buildings are planned soon. This shows their commitment to all heritage.

The committee also saves non-religious old buildings. They are working on a stone house in Famagusta. They will restore a part of Famagusta's old walls. They are also saving old water channels. Many experts and workers are helping. Mr. Tuncay thanked everyone for their work. This helps keep Cyprus's history alive. It also helps people understand the island's shared past.
