Undercover Report Reveals Exploitation in Ayia Napa

A new TV show has uncovered serious claims about human trafficking. Channel 4's documentary, "Untold: Undercover Working Holidays," looked at Ayia Napa, a popular holiday spot. It showed possible exploitation of young women working there. Managers might have asked for sexual favours for jobs. These disturbing findings have caused political anger.

The opposition party, DISY, is very upset. They say the government is hiding the truth about trafficking. The government also moved responsibility for fighting trafficking. It went from the Interior Ministry to the Migration Deputy Ministry. The DISY women's group, GODISY, is worried. They think this change could hurt victims.

Some people believe these claims show bigger problems. They think the government is not doing enough. Unions PEO and POGO called the conditions "modern slavery." British workers also face difficulties getting work permits after Brexit. The Mayor of Ayia Napa, Christos Zannettou, agreed this is a problem.

Cypriot police have started an investigation. Mayor Zannettou also promised to fix bad housing. He said he will close down unsafe places. However, he first called the events "isolated." Critics do not believe him. They think the problem is much bigger.

This situation is important for workers and for Cyprus's image. The change in responsibility for fighting trafficking is a big issue. Critics say it makes things less clear. The police investigation is ongoing. The government must show it is serious about stopping trafficking.
