Cyprus Legal Plan Has Problems

George Savvides is worried. He is Cyprus's Attorney-General. A new government plan has him concerned. The plan lets the Supreme Court look at future decisions. These decisions are made by attorneys-general. Savvides says this is a big problem for the law.

A legal group is studying the plan. They want to make the attorney-general's jobs separate. The plan has two new jobs. One job is for government advice. The other job is for criminal cases.

Now, few people check the attorney-general's work. This new plan will change that. Savvides is worried about how appeals will work. The plan says appeals go to the Supreme Court. But criminal case appeals will be checked inside first.

Savvides told the group they must think again. He said it is important to have good checks. He knows the government wants more control. But they do not agree yet. Savvides said they must fix this the right way.

The plan also has new helpers for the jobs. This is a big change for Cyprus. The government wants less power in one place. They also want clear rules. But the Supreme Court looking at decisions is a big point.
