A very bad drought is hurting the forests in Cyprus. The island has had very little rain for many years. This is the worst water problem in over 15 years. Because of this, many trees are dying.
The head of the Cyprus forestry department, Savvas Ezekiel, gave a warning. He said that many years with little rain have made the trees very weak. Even strong, old trees are now getting sick and dying.
The soil is too dry, so trees cannot get the water they need. Some places, like the Troodos mountains, are doing a little better. But other famous forests are in big trouble. In one place, called the cedar valley, almost half of the trees have already died. Important local trees, like the golden oak, are also dying.
Young trees die very quickly when it is hot. But now, even big, old trees are dying because they have no water left. Rivers and springs are also drying up. This is very bad for birds and other animals.
Experts are very worried. They say we could lose many very old trees. The future of the forests depends on the next winter. If there is not a lot of rain, the situation will become much worse.
