New Gun Law for People Guilty of Violence

The government passed a new law about gun licenses. The law is much stricter for people who hurt their partners or family.

Now, if a person is found guilty of violence against women or domestic abuse, they cannot get a gun license for ten years. This ten years starts from their court date and also from when they leave prison. The law also includes people who make or sell illegal drugs.

Police leaders suggested this change. They say it will help save lives because studies show more guns can lead to more deaths in homes. A professor said the law closes an important safety gap.

Some groups worried the law was too strict, but police support it. They say it gives them clearer rules to stop violent people from getting guns.

The new rules start in ninety days. All areas of the country must follow them. The government will create a new computer system to track people's crimes and their gun licenses.
