Former Mayor Denies Money Problems

Andreas Papacharalambous was the mayor of Strovolos. He says he did not manage money badly. The new town leaders say he did. The problem is a big debt. A company owes Strovolos €2 million. The new leaders say the debt grew. It became €2.3 million when he was mayor.

The town said the old mayor did not help with the debt. The debt was for entertainment taxes. They say he made a choice in 2020. This choice stopped some payments. He did this without the town council. They think this made the debt grow.

Mr. Papacharalambous said his choice was to save money. The company was talking to its banks. He thought asking for all the money then would make the company close.

He also said giving the company more time helped it stay open. He thought this was a good plan. It stopped the company from closing. If it closed, the town might get no money. His choice was to protect more money.

The extra €300,000 is the big problem. The new leaders think this is bad. They ask about his choice. But Mr. Papacharalambous says his choice was needed. It stopped a worse problem. They have different ideas about money.
