UN Peace Mission in Cyprus May Stay Longer

The UN wants its peace mission in Cyprus to stay longer. The leader, Antonio Guterres, wants the mission to stay for one more year. This mission helps keep peace on the island. It will now end on January 31, 2027.

This is because of worries about military actions. People are building things near the UN area. This can change the balance of power. Mr. Guterres is also worried about buildings being mixed.

But there is good news too. Talks to solve the island's problems are getting better. President Nikos Christodoulides and Tufan Erhurman are talking more. They both want peace. Greece, Turkey, and the UK also help.

Leaders met recently. They talked about the island's problems. They want to find a solution together.

Mr. Guterres wants more trust. He wants more places to cross the line. He is happy that groups are working well. They build peace and understanding. President Christodoulides is also worried about the buffer zone.

There are more problems in the buffer zone. This makes it hard to keep peace. The UN is important. It protects the area and stops bad actions. New talks are hopeful. But building shows mistrust. The next months are important.
