Son of "El Chapo" Changes Plea to Guilty

A son of the famous drug boss "El Chapo" Guzmán will now say he is guilty. His name is Joaquín Guzmán López, and he is part of the Sinaloa Cartel. He first said he was not guilty of drug crimes, but he will soon change his plea in a court in Chicago. This change happened after US lawyers decided not to ask for the death penalty. His brother, Ovidio Guzmán, did the same thing recently.

Police arrested Guzmán López in 2024 when his private plane arrived in Texas. Another important cartel leader, Ismael Zambada, was with him. After the arrest, a violent fight for power started inside the cartel. This fight caused the deaths of about 1,200 people, and 1,400 more went missing.

By saying he is guilty, Guzmán López is likely making a deal with the government. In such deals, a person gives important information and gets a shorter prison sentence. This is a big success for US officials. They want to stop the Sinaloa Cartel, which sends dangerous drugs like fentanyl into the United States. Getting information from leaders like Guzmán helps them fight the cartel.
