A group named Caminando Fronteras counted the deaths. From January to December, 3,090 people died. This is fewer than last year. But it shows the trips are still very dangerous.
Fewer migrants arrived in Spain. This is because of more border checks. So, migrants try more dangerous ways. Some boats disappear.
The group says people leave from Algeria now. They go to the Balearic Islands. These boats are smaller. Trips to the Canary Islands are also dangerous.
More police are at borders. This is part of a plan. But, people who cannot cross safely try harder. They use unsafe boats. They are desperate.
Fewer people arrive, but many die. Stronger borders mean more danger. We need safer ways for people. We need to help them at home too.
