Cyprus Has Little Water

Cyprus has a big water problem. Not much rain has fallen since October. So, the water in the dams is very low. The dams are only 9.2% full. People use more water than comes from rain. This is a problem Cyprus often has.

The Water Department shared sad numbers. By December 29th, dams had about 26.9 million cubic meters of water. This is less than normal. A chief engineer, Marios Chatzikostis, said only 1.7 million cubic meters came in. Normally, about thirteen million cubic meters come in.

Using too much water is the reason. In December, only 1.418 million cubic meters entered the dams. This was not enough. It did not replace water for homes and farms. More rain is needed. Mr. Chatzikostis said we need ten to twelve million cubic meters of rain.

Some places got more rain. But much rain fell near the sea. The water ran into the sea. The mountains need more rain and snow. This dry time can affect Cyprus's water for a long time.
