Many old people in Cyprus feel sad. They feel alone at New Year. People who are sick also feel alone. The Cyprus Elderly Observatory is worried. This problem is worse during holidays. Holidays should be happy.
New Year is a time for parties. But some people feel sad. They feel alone even with family. Life is busy now. Families live far away. People are tired. Visits are short.
Old people have health problems. They cannot see or move well. Sickness stops them from going out. They stay at home. They miss the outside world. Losing a husband or wife is hard. The first holiday is very sad.
Dimos Antoniou leads the Observatory. He said, "Some homes are dark." He said, "Some people are alone. They have no one."
Being alone is bad for health. It makes people feel weak. It is more true at holidays. If no one helps, health can get worse. Some people do not ask for help.
Antoniou said, "We need to be with them." People need help to go out. They need friends. They need to feel part of life. Losing someone needs kindness.
We must help people who are alone. We must share the holiday joy. We must help those who need it.
