Former President of Peru Sentenced to Prison

A court in Peru has sentenced former President Pedro Castillo to more than 11 years in prison. The court said he tried to illegally shut down the country's Congress in 2022. This decision ends a long legal fight.

The court found him guilty of rebellion. Prosecutors wanted a 34-year sentence, but the judges gave a shorter one. The court did not find him guilty of other charges. Castillo always said he was innocent. He said his announcement on TV was not important.

This event is part of Peru's political problems. The country has had eight presidents in ten years. Castillo was president for only 16 months and fought with Congress often. After his arrest, many of his supporters protested. The government's reaction to the protests was very strong and many people died.

Castillo will stay in a special prison for former leaders. The current president, Dina Boluarte, also faces political problems. This shows that Peru's political situation is still not stable.
