Big Rain Causes Problems in Cyprus

Heavy rain caused big problems in north Cyprus. A state of emergency was declared. One person died. Many places are flooded. This happened because of a weather system called BYRON. The rain started Monday night and continued all day Tuesday.

Water systems could not handle the rain. Rivers overflowed their banks. Emergency teams worked to move people to safety. Streets became like fast rivers. Cars were washed away. People were trapped in their homes.

A 57-year-old man named Ercin Fevzi died in his car. This was near Alagadi beach. Rescue teams saved people and animals. Hotel owners are giving free rooms.

New buildings may have made flooding worse. They were built on old rivers. This is suspected in areas like Kioneli. The Kioneli and Kanli reservoirs overflowed. The Mayor of Nicosia called it dangerous.

Important roads are closed. The road between Kyrenia and Nicosia is blocked. The main hospital was in danger. Schools are closed on Wednesday.

The Mayor of Kyrenia called it a big natural disaster. Floodwaters could reach other areas. The storm has stopped. People must clean up and check buildings. They also think about future floods.
