Every year, many protected sea turtles die on the coast of Cyprus. Officials say between 80 and 100 turtles die each year. Last week, people found a dead green turtle in Akrotiri, Limassol. This is a common problem.
The main reason for the deaths is boats. Turtles often rest near the surface of the water. Boats can hit them, especially in summer. Turtles also die from sickness or getting caught in fishing nets.
Cyprus has a special centre to help injured turtles. The centre treats turtles with cuts from boats or bad infections. One turtle has been there for three years. The centre helps about 80% of the turtles it receives. These turtles can go back to the sea.
Officials say the turtle deaths are not new. They happen every year. But there is some good news. The number of turtles in the area is slowly growing because of protection efforts. People say boat drivers and fishermen need to be more careful to help the turtles live.
