This week, there are important new meetings in Cyprus. People are trying to restart peace talks. The talks stopped many years ago.
The United Nations is helping. A UN envoy, María Ángela Holguín, arrived last week. She has talked separately with the Greek Cypriot leader and the Turkish Cypriot leader. On Wednesday, their teams will meet to prepare. Then on Thursday, the two leaders will meet together with the UN envoy.
In a positive step, the two leaders will also visit the Committee on Missing Persons. This group looks for people who disappeared during the island's division.
A senior European Union envoy is also visiting Cyprus this week. This shows the international community supports the talks. The Greek Cypriot leader will meet his country's political parties on Friday to explain the talks.
People are hopeful but careful. Everyone wants this to be the first step to real negotiations. The main problems are very difficult, but talking is the important start.
