Islands Have Big Problems

Islands like Hawaii face two big problems. They have bad weather and high prices for energy. Hawaii has much rain and floods. Other islands worry about getting enough fuel.

Hawaii had ten days of rain. Some places got lots of rain. This made floods on roads and in houses. Workers saved many people. The damage may be over one billion dollars. A dam was in danger. More rain is coming.

Also, Pacific islands worry about fuel costs. Samoa and Tonga need fuel. They get energy from fuel they buy. These islands need imported fuel. Samoa uses diesel for power.

Oil prices are going up. This is because of problems far away. World problems also make prices high. This makes it hard for islands to get fuel. Services and visiting people could stop.

China is handling this well. They have stored oil and gas. They also use wind and sun power. China has a good plan. They still buy oil. But they do not need it as much. China is ready. Other islands are not.
