Cyprus Changes Laws to Fight Crime

Cyprus wants to change its laws. This will make the Attorney-General less powerful. The Attorney-General used to have much power over private messages. These changes will help fight bad people better.

Now, the head of the Cyprus Intelligence Service will give permission for spying. Before, the Attorney-General had to say yes. The intelligence chief can now decide alone. But a new group will watch these decisions. This group has three people. A judge will be in charge.

Nicos Tornaritis said these changes are good. They will help police catch criminals. Some people said old rules made it hard to check on crime. New rules will help get information fast.

Changing laws needs many votes. The government will try to make these changes. The House Legal Committee will finish the words soon. They will vote in April. The intelligence chief must tell the watching group fast. This is to be sure things are fair. This is a big change for Cyprus.
