Two lawyer groups are asking about UK military bases in Cyprus. They say the bases are like an old colonial gift. The groups are ELDHR and CDLA. They said on Saturday the bases were not wanted by Cyprus people. Britain kept the bases when Cyprus became free in 1960. The groups say Britain's right to the bases is not fair.
The lawyers do not like how the bases were made. Britain kept the Sovereign Base Areas. These are Akrotiri and Dhekelia. The groups think this was not freedom for Cyprus. They think it was like old power. The bases also split Cyprus. This can make the island unsafe.
The groups want Cyprus to stop letting the UK have the bases. They want a plan with the UK to close the bases. Cyprus has rights. Some people do not agree. A former leader thought it was too soon to talk. He wanted a bigger plan for Cyprus first.
The former leader also spoke about a court case. It said taking land for a base was wrong. But he said the UK did not always help Cyprus. The lawyer groups agree. They think the law now helps them. A deal in 2014 let some land be used. Some people thought this was good.
But ELDHR and CDLA say it is not enough. They say Cyprus can ask to end this old power. They want full freedom. Their work shows Cyprus wants control of its land. They want to forget the past. The Cyprus government must think about this. They need to find a way to be truly free.
