Cyprus Checkpoint Gets an Upgrade

Work has started to improve the Ayios Dometios checkpoint in Cyprus. This is because there is a lot of traffic and very long waits. Sometimes people wait for more than two hours.

The European Union is paying for the work, and the United Nations is doing it. They will add a third lane to the checkpoint. The project costs €435,000 and should finish in January 2026.

The checkpoint is very important for people to cross between communities. The traffic is a big problem for daily life. One local woman, Panayiota, told the news, "I am forced to take a detour to get to my own house."

The goal is to make movement easier and safer for cars and people. This will help local businesses, too, because traffic jams keep customers away. The construction might cause some problems, but workers will try to make it less difficult. The upgrade is a step to better connect people across Cyprus.
