Sick Animals in Cyprus

Cyprus has a big problem. Farm animals are getting sick. It is called Foot-and-Mouth Disease. This sickness spreads very fast.

Some farmers do not agree with the rules. This makes the problem bigger. The rules say sick animals must die. This stops the sickness from spreading. The European Union has this rule.

The sickness started in Larnaca. It can spread to all of Cyprus. Animals on sick farms must die. This is the rule. It helps stop the virus. It also helps protect farms. Many sheep and goats have died. Also, many cattle have died. More animals may die.

A leader named Sotiria Gregoriadou spoke. She said hard choices are needed. Farmers are sad. They lose money and their animals. Some farmers were angry at officials. Police know about this.

Animals are also getting shots. These shots help them fight the sickness. This is happening near the border. Most cattle farms got shots. Not many sheep and goat farms did.

The Cyprus government will help farmers. They will give money. A group met to talk about it. They will check how much farmers lost. The government will pay money.

An EU leader visited. He said everyone must work together. He said following rules is important. The President is working on this. They want to help farmers. They also want to follow rules. The sickness spreads fast. If rules are not followed, it lasts longer. This hurts farms. Officials are checking farms. They ask people to be careful.
