Cyprus Law Change Fails

Lawmakers in Cyprus did not pass a big change. This change would help the government listen to phone calls. The idea was to fight crime and keep people safe. But many politicians did not agree. So, new tools for watching people will not be used.

The law would let the Attorney-General say yes. Then the Cyprus Intelligence Service could listen to calls. Supporters said it was good for fighting criminals. The Attorney-General said other EU countries have this. People in Cyprus worried about crime. They thought old laws were weak.

The Akel party did not like the law. They did not want the Attorney-General to decide alone. Akel wanted a judge to say yes. Because they disagreed, the law could not pass.

The law did not pass. Some think Cyprus needs more tools. Lawmakers will talk more to find a way. They need to help safety and people's rights.
