A committee in Cyprus has agreed to change the rules for former presidents and parliamentary speakers. They want to stop paying for their cars and drivers for life.
Right now, these former leaders get a car with a driver for their whole life. They also get money for help in their office. Many people say this costs the country too much money.
The committee's new plan says the car and driver will stop after five years. The money for fuel and car repairs will also end. But, the former leaders will keep getting €3,000 every month for office help.
Different politicians had different ideas. One wanted to also cut the monthly money in half. Another wanted to stop all the benefits. But the committee did not choose these plans.
The plan now goes to the full parliament for a vote. If it passes, former leaders will lose their state cars after five years. One politician says she will try to change the plan again to also limit the monthly money.
