Cyprus Ready for Fires?

Cyprus is getting ready for summer. But there are problems with fighting fires from the air. This can make it hard to stop big fires. Buying new planes is difficult. World problems also make it hard for Cyprus to be ready. This is bad for the country and mountain areas.

Cyprus needs four helicopters. But these are stuck in legal problems. Court cases stop them from being used. This makes it hard for the Fire Service to plan. It is a big problem when fires are more likely.

Jordan promised two more helicopters. But a war stopped them from coming. This makes air help weaker. Cyprus needs help from other countries. But outside problems can stop this help. Two EU planes are here. But other countries might need them. So, they are not for sure.

A company warned the government. They may not keep their planes and workers ready. A contract is not signed yet. The company might send planes to other countries. This would leave Cyprus with less help.

The Chief Fire Officer, Nikos Logginos, shared numbers. In 2025, the Fire Service had many calls. Many of these were fires. Fires in the country went up. Also, fires happen at night. Country stations close in the evening. So, many fires start at night.

The Fire Service is trying to do more. They plan to use drones to watch for fires. New sensors are in forests. They are hiring more people. New fire trucks are coming. Smoke alarms are being put in homes. Fire stations are getting better. A new center is working. It got money from the EU.

But the main worry is air help. If contract problems are not fixed, Cyprus will be at more risk. This can be bad for nature and people.
