Europe Talks About Nuclear Power

Ursula von der Leyen spoke about energy. She is the head of the European Commission. She said Europe should not use less nuclear power. She called this a "mistake." This started a big talk in Europe.

Europe has high energy prices. Europe also needs safe energy. Energy plans are hard for the EU.

Some countries, like Germany, want less nuclear power. In 1990, nuclear power made one-third of Europe's energy. Now, it makes only 15%. People worried after an accident in 2011. Germany decided to stop using nuclear power.

Europe uses more wind and solar power. But less nuclear power means Europe buys more oil and gas. This was risky when prices went up. War in Ukraine also made things hard. Russia sent less gas.

Germany's minister disagrees. He said renewable energy is "cleaner and safer." He said it is also "cheaper." This shows a split in the EU. The EU budget does not pay for nuclear projects.

Less nuclear power means higher energy costs. It also means Europe needs energy from other countries. The talk about nuclear power is important. The EU wants clean and safe energy. Was using less nuclear power a mistake? We will see.
