Former Top EU Official Questioned in Fraud Case

In a big surprise, European police have questioned a very important former EU official. Federica Mogherini was the EU's foreign policy leader for five years. Police detained her and two other senior people on Tuesday. They are investigating a fraud case about a training contract.

The police searched offices in Brussels and a college in Bruges. They also searched the homes of the suspects. All three people were released on Wednesday morning. They are not charged with a crime, but the investigation continues.

The problem is about a contract from 2021-2022. The EU's foreign service gave a training contract for new diplomats directly to the College of Europe. Police strongly suspect the rules were broken. They think people at the college may have received secret information early.

This is a very unusual event for the EU. It makes people remember other corruption problems. A college spokesperson said they will not comment now. This case is a big test for the EU's rules and trust.
