Nicosia is now one of the cities with the worst traffic in the world. A new study by TomTom, a traffic company, says driving in the Cypriot capital is very slow. The problem is worse than last year.
The study looked at 501 cities. Nicosia is number 82 for bad traffic in 2024. A 10-kilometer trip in the city now takes 26 minutes and 15 seconds on average. This is ten seconds slower than in 2023. Because of traffic, trips are 41% longer. Drivers in Nicosia lost about 99 hours in traffic last year.
Other cities in the area also have problems. Athens in Greece has even longer trip times. The most congested city in the world is Barranquilla in Colombia.
Nicosia has this problem because many people use cars. The city does not have enough good buses or trains. This traffic costs people time and money. City leaders need to find new solutions for the future.
