Cyprus Plans New Water Factories

The government of Cyprus says it has a big problem: there is not enough water. The country is very dry, and next year, 2025, could be the driest year since 1901.

Because of this, the government has a new plan. They will spend more than 200 million euros to build at least seven new desalination plants. These are like big factories that take the salt out of sea water to make it drinkable. The Minister for Agriculture said this is the most money ever for buying this kind of water.

The government will also fix old water pipes so they don’t leak. The money for this plan comes partly from the European Union.

But some people are worried. A Green Party politician said the desalination plants can harm the sea and the fish. The government says the new plants will follow strict environmental rules. They say they need to do this because the country needs water.
