Cyprus wants to change a very old law. This law gives former presidents and parliamentary speakers benefits for their whole life. Now, politicians will vote to stop this.
The old law from 1988 gave these former leaders many things. They got a car with a driver, bodyguards, and money for fuel. They also got money for a secretary. The new plan is very different. It says these benefits should only last for five years after they leave their job. After that, the car, driver, bodyguards, and fuel money will stop. The only benefit for life will be the money for a secretary.
Some politicians support this change. They say it saves public money and is more fair. One politician said, "The idea of public office ends with the job, not with death." But not everyone agrees. Some politicians want to change the new plan too. They think the secretary benefit should also stop after five years.
The vote will happen soon. If it passes, the state will save money. This shows Cyprus is thinking about new rules for its leaders.
