Cyprus Digital App Plan Questioned

Cyprus wants to make its services digital. A new app was bought. Now, this plan is being looked at closely. The government gave the job to Greece. This was done without a public contest. The Auditor-General has questions. They want to know if it was fair.

The Digital Citizen app helps people. It keeps important papers safe. People can use these digital papers. The app has digital ID cards. It also has digital driving licences. The government thinks this is good. But how they bought the app is a problem. A company in Greece did the work. This is allowed by some rules. Still, some people are worried.

The Auditor-General found issues. Work started before papers were signed. This was in March 2024. The deal was signed later. There was no cost plan before. The Auditor-General is worried. They think avoiding open bidding is bad. This can make future deals unfair.

The government says the deal was okay. They say it was faster. The cost was €1.5 million. The Greek company did a similar app before. But this does not stop the worries. People still question how digital services are bought. This affects the government's digital plans.
