Many Pet Shops in Cyprus Are Not Legal

A political group in Cyprus says many pet shops are not following the law. The group is called the Animal Party Cyprus. They say most shops selling live animals do not have the right license from the government.

To sell animals, shops need a special license. This license comes from the government's Veterinary Services. But right now, only about 40 shops have this license. About 60 shops are selling animals without it.

Cyprus has a big problem with abandoned animals. Shelters are very full. The Animal Party says people should adopt pets from shelters, not buy them from shops.

The government has given these shops an ultimatum. They must get a license by December 31. If they do not, they will face sanctions. They will have to stop selling live animals. They may also pay a fine of up to 1,000 euros.

The Animal Party will watch this situation. They hope it will help more people adopt animals and make shelters less full.
