Cyprus Checks Old Houses

Cyprus is looking at empty Turkish Cypriot houses. This is a big step. The government wants to use these lands better. They check rental papers. They see if people use them the right way. They also check if laws are followed. New laws help Greek Cypriots. These are people who lost their homes.

The minister spoke on Thursday. He said this is part of the plan. Laws for these houses changed last year. Before, the minister chose who used them. Now, there are clear rules. This is more fair. It helps citizens.

The check found problems. They looked at over 4,000 rental papers. More than 300 papers stopped. This was because rules were broken. Town hall papers were also checked. Many had problems. Some town halls fixed them. Others got warnings.

Village council papers were checked too. Many broke rules. Some councils fixed their papers. But many village councils got warnings. Some papers were stopped.

The government wants to use these houses well. They are about 10% of Cyprus land. The old way was not always fair. The new way has clear rules. This helps share things fairly. The money from rent is also important. This year, it is about €6.56 million. This money can help the country. It can also help towns. This check is important. It helps use the lands better.
