Cyprus Says Goodbye to Former President

Cyprus had a sad day. They said goodbye to their third President, George Vassiliou. He was a good leader and economist. He was President from 1988 to 1993. He made good changes to the economy. He also wanted Cyprus to join Europe. The country had a day of sadness. Flags were not all the way up. There was a special funeral.

Mr. Vassiliou was 94 years old. He was sick for some time. Many people liked his leadership. He wanted peace for the island. People sent kind words. They know he helped the country a lot.

George Vassiliou was born in Cyprus. He studied money. He was a good businessman. Then he was a famous politician. He led Cyprus during big changes. He had new ideas for people and money.

He started the University of Cyprus in 1992. This shows he liked learning. He also made news and TV more free. The country did not control them anymore.

Mr. Vassiliou wanted Cyprus to join the European Union. This happened in 2004. He also worked for peace on the island. His money plans helped the country. The country became richer.

His wife, Androulla Vassiliou, was sad. She said, "It is hard to say goodbye." They were married for almost 60 years. He will be remembered as a leader.
