Canada has joined a European Union defence plan. It is the first country outside Europe to do this. The leaders of Canada and the EU announced the decision.
Europe wants stronger defences because of worries about Russia. The EU created a large fund called SAFE to pay for new military equipment.
Canada is doing this for two main reasons. First, it wants to work more with Europe. Second, relations with the United States have been difficult recently. Canada’s Prime Minister said this move will help Canadian companies and bring European money to Canada. Now, most Canadian military spending will go to Europe, not the USA.
This agreement lets Canadian companies work in Europe. The leaders said it shows Canada and the EU are becoming closer partners. This change means Canada is building a new, important security relationship with Europe.
