The Bank of Cyprus made less money in the first nine months of 2025. Its profit was €353 million. This is 12% lower than last year. The bank's boss said this is because they earned less interest.
But the bank is also doing well in other areas. People borrowed much more money from the bank. Also, very few people are not paying back their loans. Because of this, the bank is hopeful for the full year and gave money to its shareholders.
At the same time, a political party in Cyprus wants to tax bank profits. The party, called AKEL, says banks made a lot of money from high interest rates. They say normal people and small businesses are struggling. The party proposed a new tax, but a similar idea failed last year.
Banks say this tax is a bad idea. They say it could stop foreign companies from investing in Cyprus. The government must now decide between this new tax and supporting the banks.
